This year I challenged myself to enter and complete a cycling sportive – I opted to go with one local to where we grew up in Hereford. It happens to be run by my favourite Herefordshire brewery – Wye Valley – and it is the Land of Hops and Glory Sportive. I’ll add the occasional training update – it will be interesting to look back over my thoughts during the weeks leading up to the event!
Now the proximity of this event to the arrival of Little H was a carefully thought out and agreed plan with Mrs Heatho – it would give me a reason / excuse to make sure I carried on cycling and kept a level of fitness. That has gone straight out the window – partly because of weather and partly because it turns out having an immobile bundle of joy arrive is astronomically time consuming!
6 weeks to go
So training so far hasn’t been great. It’s been 9 days since I last made it out on the bike, 11 days since I conquered Curbar Edge, and 12 days since I made it out to the local hills on the bike for a ride of any decent length. Seriously considering having to get the turbo trainer out of the garage to get my legs spinning. 95km+ is not going to be easy on legs that are no longer used to distance, speed or climb!
Since the arrival of Little H I’ve really struggled to be out on the bike, which I guess is no surprise, but the weather has scuppered any chance I’ve had by being simply awful! The sunny days always seem to be when I’m at work 😫
There were half-baked plans to get some training rides in this weekend with friends, but the weather put an end to those yet again. I’m going to have to up my training game this week…
