I can’t believe it has been snowing again. Weather alerts all over the place. It’s March for goodness sake! British SUMMER time starts next week! 😂 The snow and the 30kph winds completely ruined any plans of getting out on the bike! Still – all in all it’s been a fun and chilled weekend, starting with some friends coming up to visit overnight on Friday. What better way to start a weekend than with friends, beer and a takeaway curry!
Saturday afternoon saw the reunion of our NCT group. Booked at our final class some 3 months ago – we all got together for the first time with all 8 children! We had a “fuddle”. What is a fuddle I hear you ask… 🤔 I asked the same when we moved to Derbyshire. It is a “food-huddle” and as far as I can work out it’s a Derbyshire thing (or at least a Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire thing). Essentially, everyone brings a small selection of different foods, which results in a table overflowing in sweet and savoury snacks that the group of people typically has absolutely zero chance of finishing. They’re great, and a really easy way to get together as a group without undue pressure on the hosts. Plus the hosts then get left with food and often cake that can form lunches and dinners for days to come!
Mrs Heatho had her first alcoholic drink since the arrival of Little H as the Mums shared round the prosecco and a great afternoon was had by all. Even all 8 children were well behaved all afternoon! It was lovely to catch up with everyone – we had such a nice group of people and meeting them all has been well worth the NCT class expense on its own 🙂 If you’re debating whether to spend the money on the classes – I’d recommend it just for the friends you’ll both make!
The “Mini” Beast from the East
It’s back! Saturday night saw another dumping of snow over parts of the UK with a bitter easterly wind. This meant that plans to head out to the hills were out on hold – a “feels like” temperature of -8C in the hills was deemed to cold for small people. This meant that Sunday has been a largely housebound day – even the family dog walk was cut short because the wind was just too bitter for Little H.
So to entertain myself, I built Little H a snowman in the garden instead 😂⛄️ It was definitely for Little H and was in no way a childish half hour of me having fun in the snow… 😉
We didn’t get much snow… so my snowman isn’t very big… as you can see from the photos where Fern posed nicely for scale! Despite Mrs Heatho’s fits of giggles at my childishness and the reasonably pathetic size of it, I enjoyed making my snowman! Even Fern enjoyed helping, although Fern’s “helping” was definitely more a game of “attack the snowball”…grrr. It must be the first time in over 15 years I’ve made a snowman – it’s important to do some random silly stuff sometimes, keeps you sane and gives you a break from everything!
That said, I’m now very ready for milder weather and some sunshine! Someone else who is a bit fed up with the snow is Noah, our cat, who has slept at the foot of our bed through the whole thing…
Six Nations Finale
Well what a disappointment that was. For an England fan that is. The Six Nations is far and away my favourite rugby competition. Sadly, this year England didn’t even come up short, they were miles behind – 3 defeats in 5 is far from what us fans expect from a team that had managed 18 straight wins this time last year. This was made even worse by the fact that the final defeat at Twickenham handed Ireland the Grand Slam… still, there is always next year! 🏴
NCAA March Madness
Another competition that peaks my interest at this time of year is courtesy of some American friends who came to work in the UK for 18 months. The NCAA basketball tournament takes place in March every year (hence the name March Madness)… and each year I now complete a “bracket”. This is essentially predicting the outcome of each match of the 64 team tournament. Sadly, this year, after less than 4 days (not even the end of the first round!) my bracket is well and truly busted with one of my finalists and 3 of my final 8 falling in round one, so I think my chances are slim this year… 😢
